Understanding Tantrums: How the CALM Technique Helps Children Regulate Their Brain
Every Child Has Big Emotions

Before we understand tantrums, the Amygdala, the Prefrontal Cortex, or the CALM Framework, it helps to picture how differently a tantrum can look at different ages.

An 18-month-old may cry because a phone is taken away.

A two-year-old may throw himself on the floor because he wants chocolate before dinner.

A three-year-old may scream in a toy shop because a parent refuses to buy a toy.

A four-year-old may throw the pieces of a game because he lost.

A five- or six-year-old may shout, “It’s not fair!” when screen time ends.

The situations change as a child grows.

Language improves. Understanding improves. The ability to reason improves.

But one important ability is still under construction: Emotional regulation.

So throughout this article, we will move from age one to six and understand how the same CALM Framework can be adapted according to a child’s developmental stage.

A Typical Tantrum Moment

Imagine this situation. A three-year-old is in the kitchen. It is around 7:30 in the evening. Dinner is almost ready.

He notices a chocolate on the counter.

Child: “Mama, chocolate!”

Mama: “Dinner first. You can have chocolate after dinner.”

Child: “No! I want chocolate NOW!”

Mama, calmly: “After dinner.”

Suddenly, everything changes. He starts crying. Mama doesn’t change her answer. The crying becomes louder. He screams, kicks his legs and drops to the floor. He may even try to hit Mama or throw something nearby.

Papa: “Enough! Stop crying!”

But he cries even harder.

Now imagine what many parents may be thinking: “Why is he behaving like this over one chocolate?” “He understands what I’m saying.” “Why can’t he just wait for ten minutes?” “Is he becoming stubborn?” “Should I ignore him?” “Should I punish him?” “If I comfort him, will I spoil him?” “Should I just give him the chocolate and finish this drama?”

These are exactly the moments when understanding the developing brain becomes important.

What Is Actually Happening Inside a Child’s Brain?

To Mama and Papa, the problem is simple: chocolate now versus chocolate after dinner. But inside a three-year-old, something much bigger is happening.

He wanted something. He heard “No — not now.” He experienced disappointment. His frustration increased. And he does not yet have the mature emotional-regulation skills of an adult.

For parents, we can simplify what is happening using two important parts of the brain: the Amygdala, our “Emotional Brain,” and the Prefrontal Cortex, our “Thinking Brain.” These are simplified, parent-friendly labels — the brain is far more complex — but they give us a useful way to understand a child’s behaviour.

The Amygdala is involved in detecting and responding to emotionally important situations. The Prefrontal Cortex contributes to abilities such as impulse control, waiting, planning, flexible thinking, considering consequences, and regulating behaviour.

A child’s problem is not that he has no Thinking Brain. His Thinking Brain is still developing. When he is calm, he may understand, “Mama said chocolate after dinner.” But when his disappointment becomes enormous and his Emotional Brain is highly activated, his developing Thinking Brain may temporarily have much less control over his behaviour.

An adult may think, “I really want the chocolate, but dinner is in ten minutes. I can wait.” A three-year-old may not yet be able to consistently do that.

Think of it this way: a young child has a powerful Emotional Brain accelerator, but his Thinking Brain brakes are still developing.

This changes the question we ask as parents. Instead of only asking, “How do I stop this behaviour?” we also ask, “How do I help my child move from dysregulation back to regulation — and then teach him a better way to respond?”

That is where co-regulation becomes important. Before a child can consistently regulate himself, he needs repeated experiences of being helped through difficult emotions by a regulated adult. The CALM Framework describes this process of co-regulation in four steps.

The CALM Framework

The purpose of CALM is not to make a child stop crying in ten seconds. It is to help Mama and Papa respond in a way that supports regulation without surrendering reasonable boundaries.

Because during the peak of a tantrum, a long lecture aimed at the Thinking Brain may achieve very little. First, help the Emotional Brain settle. Then reconnect. Then teach.

Regulate first.   Connect next.   Teach later.

CCalm Yourself A child’s Emotional Brain is highly reactive to the emotional state of the adults around him. A raised voice, a tense body, or visible frustration from Mama or Papa can add fuel to his dysregulation rather than settling it. Before anything else, the parent’s own nervous system needs to steady — a slower breath, a lower voice, a relaxed posture. This is not about suppressing frustration; it is about making sure the adult in the room is the regulated one. A child cannot borrow calm from an adult who does not have it to lend.
AAcknowledge the Emotion Once the parent is steady, the next step is to name what the child is feeling — not to agree with his demand, but to show him that his emotion has been seen. “You really wanted the chocolate right now. You’re upset because you have to wait.” Acknowledging the emotion is different from granting the request. A child can be disappointed and still not get chocolate before dinner. Naming the feeling helps the Emotional Brain feel understood, which is often the first step toward it settling down.
LListen & Limit This step holds two things together at once: listening to the child’s distress with patience, while keeping the original limit exactly where it was. “I hear you. Chocolate is still after dinner.” Changing the boundary because of the tantrum teaches a child that big emotions can be used to change outcomes. Holding the boundary while staying warm teaches him that his feelings are welcome even when the answer stays the same.
MModulate Modulate is about helping a child’s body and brain gradually return to baseline — through closeness, a quiet presence, a hand on his back, or simply staying nearby without pressure to “stop crying immediately.” Once he is calm — not during the peak of the storm — there is space for a conversation about what happened. This does not need to happen right away. It may come an hour later, two hours later, or often works best at night, in a quiet, unhurried moment. In that conversation, describe the behaviour simply: what happened, what was right, what was wrong, and what the proper way to express that feeling would have been next time. This is where the real teaching happens, once the Thinking Brain is back online — and it is also where the brain is gradually being wired for the future. Each calm, repeated conversation like this helps strengthen the Thinking Brain’s ability to step in. Over time, the same situation that once triggered a full tantrum — where the Emotional Brain took over completely — starts to look different. The Thinking Brain, now stronger from repeated practice, is able to step in and help a child manage the feeling instead of being swept away by it. This change does not happen after one conversation. It takes time, and it takes consistency — the same calm response, the same kind of conversation, repeated again and again, before the shift becomes visible.

How CALM Grows With a Child: Age by Age

The four letters of CALM stay the same from age one to age six. What changes is how much language, choice, and reasoning we bring into each step, as a child’s Thinking Brain matures.

2 to 3 Years

The Amygdala is still very much in charge, but the Prefrontal Cortex is beginning to form early, fragile connections. A child may occasionally understand a rule when calm, yet lose that understanding completely once the Emotional Brain takes over — which is why the same child who “knows the rule” at breakfast can still melt down over it at dinner.

Calm Yourself  the parent’s steadiness is still the anchor, since the child’s own regulation skills are barely emerging.

Acknowledge  short, simple labels work well: “You’re sad. You wanted the chocolate.”

Listen & Limit  one clear sentence, repeated calmly rather than re-explained: “Chocolate after dinner.”

Modulate  comfort plus a short, simple reflection once he’s calm — “You were upset. Now you feel better.” Full explanations are still too much for this age.

3 to 4 Years

The Prefrontal Cortex is now developing more steadily, giving a child brief windows where he can pause before reacting — but these windows are short and easily overwhelmed. The Amygdala can still take over quickly, especially when a child is tired, hungry, or facing a sudden disappointment, but he is beginning to recover from big emotions somewhat faster than before.

Calm Yourself  still essential, though a child is beginning to notice and sometimes mirror an adult’s calm.

Acknowledge  slightly fuller sentences: “You really wanted that toy car. It’s hard when we say no.”

Listen & Limit  the limit can be given with a brief, one-line reason: “Not today — we already have cars at home.”

Modulate  a short conversation after he calms down — a sentence or two about what happened, without turning it into a lecture.

4 to 5 Years

The Prefrontal Cortex now supports more sustained impulse control, and a child can often be guided to use it if an adult steps in early, before the Amygdala fully takes over. Once the Emotional Brain does take over, though, it can still override the Thinking Brain just as strongly as at younger ages — the difference is that a child now recovers faster and can participate in some of his own calming.

Calm Yourself  remains the starting point, but a child is now more capable of borrowing the parent’s calm quickly if it is offered early.

Acknowledge  richer language, including naming the specific feeling: “You’re frustrated because you lost the game.”

Listen & Limit  the limit can come with a small, appropriate choice within it — “We’re not buying a toy today. You can choose one sticker instead.”

Modulate  a genuine short conversation afterward — what happened, how he felt, and one simple idea for next time.

5 to 6 Years

By now the Prefrontal Cortex has matured enough for a child to reason about fairness, hold a conversation about feelings, and delay gratification for meaningfully longer stretches — though it is still years away from adult-level control. The Amygdala can still be triggered by strong disappointment or injustice, which is why “It’s not fair!” moments still happen, but a child now has real tools to work with once the storm passes.

Calm Yourself  still the foundation, though a child increasingly notices when a parent is not calm, and this affects how much he trusts the process.

Acknowledge  a child can now discuss feelings more directly, including protests like “It’s not fair!” which deserve a real acknowledgment rather than dismissal.

Listen & Limit  limits can be explained briefly and, where appropriate, include the child in simple problem-solving: “Screen time is over for today. Let’s decide together what happens tomorrow.”

Modulate  a fuller conversation once he’s settled — reflecting on the feeling, the boundary, and beginning to build his own vocabulary and strategies for handling disappointment.

Growing Together

A child will keep changing. His words will grow longer, his questions will grow sharper, and “It’s not fair” will eventually turn into more complex negotiations about fairness, freedom, and independence.

What stays constant is the sequence: a parent who calms themselves first, acknowledges what their child is feeling, listens while holding the limit, and helps the storm pass before any teaching begins.

Regulate first. Connect next. Teach later. That is how every child slowly builds the Thinking Brain that will one day handle disappointment on its own.
